On another subject entirely:

The New York Times reports that a navigable passage has opened through sea ice along the entire Russian Arctic coast. The National Ice Center says that this is the first recorded occurrence of the Northwest Passage and Northern Sea Route both being open at the same time.

Would be circumnavigators with warm winter clothing should take advantage of this once in 125,000 years opportunity to circle the globe in a voyage shorter than 10,000 miles. If you hurry, you can make it before the midnight sun sets.
