 I was curious about this ship because of the old adage that a  planning
hull can't carry enough fuel to get out of sight.  That is apparently 
 true of this ship -- she can run at 48 knots alright, but will run out
of  fuel a that speed in less than five hours!  

REPLY:
According to the Navy fact sheet, this ship has a range of 3,500 miles,
though admittedly at 18 knots. Doesn't specify which set of engines she
does that on, but presumably the diesel auxiliaries.
