Six years ago, I sold my 1977 Tartan 37 to a young English couple (in
Florida). They sailed it in the Carribean for a year, then sailed it back to
England and sold it approx 4 years ago. They had to meet the EU requirements
to be able to sell the boat.
Turned out that since I had sailed to Bermuda in 1981 and had paper work to
prove it, this event triggered an exception under the EU rules, and allowed
them to import and sell the boat without meeting all the requirements on the
boat inspection. Some rule that if the boat had been in EU before some
cut-off date (and apparently Bermuda is classed by them as EU), the boat was
"grandfathered" to not require the inspection.
