T&T: westerbeke help

Many times the reason these things fail is some sort of abrasion occurs near
the seal....most likely sand. Not only does the abbrasion cause a failure of
the seal, but it scores the shaft as well even though you may not be able to
see it. If you just replace the seal without replacing the shaft, the scoring
will abbrade the new seal and you will get leakage shortly thereafter(probably
what happened with Brent). Long story short, get the kit and do the whole
deal....IMHO.

You have to completely dissasemble the pump to change the seals, so I would
replace the bearings, cam, etc while I was there. The kit also comes with a
new shaft, which you probably don't need, so you might be able to buy the
rest of the parts for a lot less than the kit. (The shaft is probably more
than half the cost of the kit). Just be sure to look close at the shaft. If
there's any scoring at all around the seal areas, it does need to be
replaced.
All this being said, I had an impeller burn up do to a clogged strainer in
my 8kw Westerbeke at 1033 hours, and after changing the impeller the seal
was leaking. (I attribute this to overheating due to low water flow). I did
the entire rebuild kit. Still going strong at 2900 hours now.
