According to the manual for my Icom 504, it appears that responding to
a position request is a manual operation - when the radio receives a
position request, it will beep and display "Postion Request", and the
requestor's MMSI or name - you can press "clear" to ignore the
request, or "enter" to send the position report.

Most manufaturers have the manuals for their products available
on-line. You should download the manuals of radios you are seriously
considering to see how the various features work.
