If you don't care about being able to do a zigzag stitch, buy an old Singer on Ebay.  Preferred models are 201 or 66.  The 221 is also rugged, but too small for large canvas work.  The 201-2 is fully gear driven, while belt driven models may need a little hand assistance going through heavy quadrupled up fabric on corners.  Don't pay too much $100 is plenty.  If they are higher than that - wait for the next one.
