T&T: Seacock plugs

I thought about doing this once. I was going to use SS eye screws in the end
of the plug with SS stranded wire crimped through it and around the seacock.
The question is, how do you size the plug? So you can hammer it into the
seacock if the hose breaks off and the seacock is frozen, or hammer it into
the hole left if the seacock vanishes, or...???
I ended up with a bag of wooden plugs right at the entrance to my engine
room, complete with a "dead strike" mallet. That's the kind that has lead
shot inside and really packs a wallop as it makes impact. Thank goodness
I've never had to use it!
