T&T: Seacock plugs

I am going to attach wood bungs to my seacocks just in case. The best way I can think to do it is to drill a small hole through the head of the bung then tie it to the seacock with a string through this hole. This would not effect the ability of the plug to seal and I will still have a flat top to pound it in with. The bilge is dry so the bung and string should last a long time. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
