T&T: Anchoring/Anti Roll Device

Milt is spot on. Leverage makes all the difference.

We have used a Magma unit off the 18' boom of our Westsail 43 in anchorages
for many years and it certainly makes a rolly anchorage bearable. Of course
the 18' is not as good as Milt's 31' and actually a second one hung from a
whisker pole off the opposite side would be much better.

I spoke with a N46 owner a few years ago in St. Lucia. He had two and used
them from his outriggers as Milt does. I got the impression he spent a lot of
time in anchorages because he said the hinges broke and had to be  re-welded;
also, he replaced the small line pendants with chain because the line wore
out. But he was still using them. I believe it's important that the legs of the
pendants be exactly equal in order to prevent failures of this type - I
recall someone saying that the holes for the pendant terminations were
mis-drilled.

On Seahorse, we put one paravane in and that works fine in most places. If a
storm swell is forecast, we simply move the boat.

> As others have shown, there are lots of opinions about using these
devices. Truth be told, my experience shows it's all about leverage. If you can
provide the leverage, a Magma boat stabilizer can do the job. If you can't,
there's no way it'll seriously reduce your rolling.
