At dead zero tide yesterday I ran aground in both Lockwoods Folley and
Shallotte Inlet. My boat draws 4 foot 9 inches. In both instances I was
right in the middle of the marked channel. The problem is these are bumps
in the sand and a boat just 10 or 15 feet to the port or starboard may make
it through with no problem. I followed a Krogen with a 4 foot 3 inch draft
who said their sounder never showed less than 5 feet, yet I was hard
aground? Anyway, because I was at idle it was a simple matter to back off,
move port or starboard and continue. This was a first for me and overall a
good experience. With the moon and tide in the next few days, if you
heading there you need to be careful.
