My 1984 32' Island Gypsy has mechanical steering and has a Raymarine
autopilot installed. I think it was the first and only autopilot
installed on this boat. It uses a Linear Drive connected directly to
the rudder and gets it's course data from my Furuno VX2 electronics.
I'd recommend it.

I believe I've also read on the Jack Rabbit Marine web site that the
Furuno control heads will utilize the Raymarine linear drive as well.

Have a very unreliable Benmar 210 autopilot. Have spent months of
repairs
and $'s trying to get it right. Boat is a 36' trawler with mechanical
steering. Have any of the members replaced the Benmar with another
brand and
still kept the mechanical steering intact? I don't want to get involved
with
a hydraulics situation.
