Heading for Edenton up the Albemarle (spelling correct I often make
mistake Albermarle and Abermarle)
It is Flat A-- Calm this AM. It is not often that you can say that.
The Dismal Swam was beautiful. An avenue of fall colors miles long. The
colors cannot compete with New England but it is still fine for what
the Mid Atlantic area cane muster
A raft of boats left Portsmouth and all except me took the Coinjock
route. I locked through alone but then picked up three sail who
overnghted on the high side of the lock.
We went straight through to South Mills and one sail caught up after
stopping at the visitors center. He locked us through at 1:30 which
was early because there was no norhtbound traffic. As we started down
the other two sails had arrived on time and called for a locking but
of course they were too late. Well the guidebooks say it is 2:00 for
southbound but beware, they will start early if no Northbound traffic.
Call ahead to have them hold the lock for the normal time. If that
was me left behind I would have been upset. Lock keeper was the
weekend relief so maybe regular guys would have given a radio call.
Got the last part of my semiannual fill up at Portsmouth Boating
Center at 2.499 including tax. I paid 3.03 at Cape May and lost a few
hundred bucks on what I took on there. These days fueling is like
investing in the futures market and I lost on this trade. Since fuel
this spring for the northbound run I paid closer to $4.00 I have no
complaints.
We are looking forward to dinner at the Waterrman restaurant in
Edenton and seeing friends there. The special appetizer at Waterman
is broccoli. I have never seen a dish offered like this. It does have
a sauce but just the fresh vegetable is spectacular.
