T&T: Shaft Log Packing

I was just reading Power and Motoryacht and someone asked a question about 
the Gore-Tex packing. The answer was correct about the only source being 
www.emarine.com and that the stuff West carries is not real Gore-Tex 
packing. The answer also said that the author uses 8 or 9 rings of packing 
in each shaft log.

I can only get 3 rings of regular packing in my shaft logs and with the 
Gore-Tex stuff only 2 rings although I could probably go back and add a 
third now. I have no leakage and no complaints but is 8 or 9 rings normal? 
Do I have a short shaft log?
