T&T: Temporary Mount of In Hull Transducer

Go with the toilet wax ring mount.

I used this method to "temporarily" mount the transducer in my Catalina 22 Sport three years ago. It still works great and I've decided to leave it there. The wax takes a "set" after a while and mounts the transducer firmly in place. In the case of my little boat, it means no holes in the hull (outside of the infamous keel volcanoe).

Make sure you ball the wax and knead out any voids. The key is getting a good "fluid-like" contact. Voids will attenuate the signal.

The same goes for the hull. The mounting location should be over a single layer of solid glass, level mounted to shoot straight down and free of cavitation or other interference. For the best signal you might need to move the mount location around a bit, especially if your boat has a semiplaning or planing hull form.

In the case of my little displacement sailboat, this was just ahead of the keel.

  Good luck,
  Ricky
