First, a guy calling himself "stupid" asked about bleeding the air out of the
Lehman engine.
Second, I was glad to see a great line in response: "You are not stupid. You
just did something stupid (running out of fuel)." And I suspect that most all
of us have done something stupid. Maybe one of these fine days I'll tell a
couple of mine.
And thirdly, back to the bleeding question which I chose not to respond to til
I could read my manual and my notes.
The manual for my Lehman SP135 and other size SP engines is 4C91C dated June
1987. On page A18 after discussing how to bleed the secondary fuel filters it
states, "No bleeding of the injection pump is required as these are fitted
with a self purge device."
However, in 1995 when my boat was still on the East Coast one of the engines
stopped due to a clogged fuel filter and I could not get it restated. A
gentleman by the name of Davis Craven who owned Waterway Diesel Center in
Galesville MD told me to open the manual to page B13 and look at key#12 "Bleed
Valve" on the side of the injector pump in the exploded diagram of the
injector pump. He told me to take a 18mm open end wrench and loosen it. It
looks like a nut. I did pump fuel until it came out there and then the engine
stated. I subsequently took a photo of the injector pump and marked it with
this info and put it into the front of my manual but must admit I have not had
to do it again.
But I certainly do find it interesting that this part is called a "Bleed
Valve" even though bleeding at the injector is supposedly not necessary.

PS Does anybody know if Davis Craven and Waterway Diesel are still in
business?
