My Bilge keels are part of the hull -- that is -- via access from the engine
room you can actually stand inside of them, so they do penetrate the hull in
that sense. Makes for an interesting storage area!
And yes, the boat is designed so that it can utilize the fins and stand on
its own bottom.

Bilge keels are two "fins" that run alongside the hull equidistant
from the main keel. They are considered a form of passive
stabilization in that they provide resistance to roll both at sea and
at anchor.
