T&T: Bilge Keels

Bilge keels are two "fins" that run alongside the hull equidistant  
from the main keel. They are considered a form of passive  
stabilization in that they provide resistance to roll both at sea and  
at anchor.  Steel trawlers with bilge keels may be able, depending on  
design and strength, to stand on their own bottom which can have many  
useful purposes. Bilge keels are exterior and do not penetrate the hull.
