T&T: installing reverso fuel polishing system

Hi Greg,

I just re-did my fuel system including a fuel polishing system. I have 4
tanks. I basically made two loops, a Polishing loop and a Device loop. On
the device loop, the fuel goes to a manifold and then to each user, Main,
Genset, Furnace, then the return goes to a manifold and back to the tanks.
Every tank has a supply to the manifold, and the return manifold has a
return to each tank...I can draw and return to and from any tank I
wish...although one will be designated my day tank, for everyday use.

The second loop, the polishing loop is the same...all supplies go to one
manifold, then to the ESI Polishing system, then to a return manifold.
Again, all separate plumbing. Each tank has two independent supplies, and
two independent returns. I can polish one tank, or polish as I transfer fuel
from one tank to another by switching the manifold ball-cocks. It's a jumble
of pipes and hoses, but it will serve me for years and years. My two wing
tanks even have an "equalizer" hose between them so they both draw down
together. I can close the valve between them if I wish, but usually those
two tanks will fill and empty together as if they were one tank.

By the way, to get down to which tank will be drawn from, I have to narrow
four tank supplies down to the one that will go through the filters and into
the User manifold to the Users. To do this, I use 3 Groco selector valves.
The Groco selector valve throws the supply and return lines simultaneously.
It has 6 ports, so you can choose which of two supplies to route thru the
valve. (the returns route the same as the supplies, just in the other
direction...That way I can throw one lever and simultaneously close the
supply and return from one tank, and open the supply and return from
another. Parker-Hannifin has a much more elaborate version of the same
valve that will do it both manually or electronically from the wheel house,
say...it's quite expensive, tho, called their Fuel Selection Valve.

Here's how it works: The first valve chooses between Tank 1 & 2, the second
chooses between Tank 3 & 4, and the third chooses between what's coming from
Valve 1 or Valve 2. It all looks on paper kind of like a family tree...In
this manner I can route the supply and return from any tank and back by
throwing at most two levers usually.

As far as other accessories, on the User loop, just before the supply
manifold (after the Groco Y valves just mentioned), I have a little Jabsco
Jr Gear Puppy in parallel bypass to bleed the system that will push fuel
through the dual Racor filters next along the line...then to the manifold
where it's available to the "Users".

Hope this helps,

Subject: T&T: installing reverso fuel polishing system

I would appreciate advice/thoughts on installing a reverso fuel polishing
system on my 40 foot twin engine Tollycraft. I have four tanks, but can only
return to the forward tanks now. I am having the fuel manifold system redone
as well since it is old, tired, and not intuitive. My questions: Do I need
separate fuel intakes and return lines for each tank, or okay to plumb into
existing lines. Also, how critical is it that I get to the bottom of the
tanks? Thanks in advance.
