Plastic ties can also work well as markers....or just let out some chain via
"one mississippi", "two missippi" counting then measure....and see how much
scope you have as a baseline....
Actually, I gave up measuring until the anchor is set ....I just back down and
see what the scope looks like after the anchor grabs....on a windy day and no
one nearby I let out more than in a crowded harbor...
Except for windy days or long period anchors, I rarely use more than about
three to one scope ....then again I'm not positive since I don't measure....
Note also that the nature of the bottom and anchor combination
matters....Danforth in sand will hold without much scope, a plow is soft mud
