After five years, we finally trained our Tibetan Terrier, Cami, to "go" on
the foredeck. We had tried demonstrating ourselves (that was fun),and
having a grass AND then an artificial turf lined box. No way. When we
discovered that Cami would cover the spot where other female dogs had gone,
especially her pal Lucy, we sopped up Lucy's pee with paper towels, stuck it
in a zip lock, drove six hours back home, rubbed the foredeck with the paper
towels and let Cami loose. Nothing.
We finally succeeded when we realized that she thought she would be doing
something wrong if she went on the foredeck, so she wouldn't do it when we
were around. We put her on a long lead and left her alone on deck with some
drinking water for an hour. Repeated every three hours. After two days at
anchor - SUCCESS! Cami was given some filet slices and lots of loving. We
tried it a few more times and each time she caught on faster. Now we just
open the cabin door and say, "Cami, hurry up."
Washdown pumps are good for more things than cleaning off the anchor!
