i often ask.... "what have boat builders learn in the past 30 or 40 years?"

judging by todays boat, not much except making most mid size boat 
ridiculously expensive (400k for 40' boat) and make them sylish at the 
expense of practical.

10 days ago, we were tied up at Duck Key, out in the corner, and i coudln't 
help but noticing an oder 41 Hatt almost in front of us.   We went over to 
chat with the owner, neither my girlfriend or I cound't stand not knowing 
more about the boat...  Turned out to be a 1967 41 Double Cabin, fully 
restored yet very original, but most importantly an original owner boat ! 
The owner was on board a very nice gentleman in his 80s along with is son 
who was 14 when the boat was delivered.

Looking at the boat, the cabin design, the large master, the huge aft deck, 
nice side decks, etc... we coudlnt' help wonder what happened in 41 years? 
More gadgets, a little more convenience but really nothign in term of 
design, space and usability.  In many ways, the same can be said of the my 
old 53MY, I laugh when I read Hatteras brochures claiming 12" side decks, 
130' sq feet aft deck, room for an 11' foot dink on a 64 footer. I have 17" 
side decks, 150 sq ft aft and 13' dink on a boat that has almost 3' narrower 
beam!

What a waste of resources and technology, some modern boats don't even give 
you any flat foredeck area to stand on for anchoring duties, like some 
million dollars Azimut!
