<<Cause of engine loss:
"...and the other a fried seized alternator bearing which disables the
engine
as the same belt drives raw and coolant pumps....">>
My John Deere 80hp 4039DFM came with an 80amp alternator driven by a pair of
v-belts, which also drove the coolant pump. The raw water pump is gear
driven. I added a second alternator on the other side, and drive each
alternator by a single v-belt. Since each v-belt also drives the coolant
pump, there is some redundency. Loose a belt, and you lose only one
alternator. The coolant keeps pumping. This was a pretty easy modification
on my engine, though not all installations will have the required room for
the extra alternator.
