T&T: Trawler versus motoryacht

I have a twin engine displacement boat with redundant fuel filters,
polisher, separate fuel pickups and fully protected props which have
afforded me great true redundancy. I can run almost to hull speed on one
engine and maneuver on one engine as rudders are huge. Point is that I've
lost propulsion in one engine twice, once running gear related and the other
a fried seized alternator bearing which disables the engine as the same belt
drives raw and coolant pumps. Both times ...no problem just continued on to
destination and made fix. It is very simplistic to assume that failures are
eliminated if you just keep clean fuel. Events from engine component
failure to running gear failures (wrapped crab/fish pots, lines etc.) can
and do occur. Of course just drop the hook and call sea tow/tow boat US????
If you are in a place where that can be done safely sea state?, gulf stream,
open large body of water with fetch and wind building, narrow rock lined
channel, major shipping channel with large constrained by draft ships that
may not even see you given their radar shadows even if they could can't stop
or turn except over great distance, etc, etc. etc. I personally have
enjoyed the benefit of redundant systems twice in a very short time (perhaps
snake bit) and am comforted by it and feel the minimal extra cost to
maintain an extra (small 54 hp naturally aspirated diesel) engine with
shaft, prop and rudder is worth the peace of mind.

Differently stroked,

It all makes sense except the dual engines. Why would anyone want twice the
maintenance, twice the oil at oil change etc, etc.

Since most engine failures are fuel related; two dead engines are the same
as one dead engine. Have a good set of filters or a fuel polishing system.

For manoevering a stern thruster is cheaper than a second engine.

And a single prop is more protected than two.

Oh well different strokes for different folks.

Henry

My personal preference is for a cockpit. For myself I simply would not
consider an aft cabin boat, it just doesn't work for me, and my boys and I
like to fish so the cockpit is the best setup for us. I'm also a SERIOUS
tightwad so the trawler economy appealls to me. I like twin engines (a
little
untrawlerish) so that's what my boat has, if it had came with a single I
would
have changed it to twins. My grade school teachers always said I was a
little
slow so the trawler type kinda fits my personality, I guess. The speed it
makes is just about perfect for pulling trolling lines. The Krogen line of
trawlers pretty much fits my idea of the classic trawler, the older ones
anyway, designed by James S. especially the 42, and the 54.
