As a matter of fact my '72 has the plastic portholes from Fuller Brush, who
still carries parts, and I would not trade them for bronze. The bronze sweat
in winter cold, the plastic with plexiglass require no maintenance and are
excellent insulators.
On my old Matthews, the bronze ports had to be repainted about every five or
seven years....sweating caused the paint to lose adhesion....
My only porthole complaint is that Hatteras unnecessarily screwed trim rings
outside to the hull instead of just using caulk to hold the trim rings. They
all crack and the screw heads flake paint...I replaced my trim rings and just
used caulk to hold them in place...smoth, clean,no cracks after eight
years...In fact a sistership from May '72, mine is Oct 72, also had plastic
ports... Rob
