I guess I should have mentioned in my original posting that I also 
run a small charter business.  Other Captains I'm friendly with had a 
tough time getting insurance on boats over 10 years old even though 
the boats were in pristine condition.  One spent a year searching 
before he found an insurance company that would take him on as a 
charter customer.

I'm not saying that it is right but I'd rather avoid that hassle.

Having been in the charter industry in one capacity or another for the last 25 or so years, I'd have to agree with you. While you can get charter insurance for older boats, it's getting harder and harder. With more hoops to jump through than ever before. 
   
  That said, I'd still take a well built older boat over a Carver any day. :-)
