'Lo All,
I chose a 4KW 48 mile radar simply because I can see thunderstorms
further away and, hopefully, be able to avoid them. Fun to watch
F-15s and other aircraft when at low altitudes, too! Shades of
another lifetime....
Anyway, other than for weather, I believe that a 4 KW 48 mile radar
is overkill. But....weather is a very serious factor on the Gulf of
Mexico and adjoining bays, which is why we have it. Ours is a
Raymarine. Once, in a torrential rain squall on St. Andrews Bay (I
could barely see the bow of the Celestial for short periods of time),
after adjusting for rain and all, the CRT was almost as clear as it
is in clear weather. I was astounded at how well it worked.
YMMV
Take care and be safe.
