T&T: Radar Performance Question

I am planning to replace the radar on my 36 ft Albin with a new 2KW unit
which will integrate with my course computer. A friend tells me that when it
is raining heavily I will need a 4 KW radar to see through the rain. I do
not intentionally go out when the weather is bad so to me the radar would
seldom be necessary but would be needed precisely when the weather turns bad
unexpectedly. At 5 MPH I don't need a lot of range to stop or turn in time.
Has anybody experienced poor performance from a 2 KW radar? The boat will be
primarily used to do the great loop. The choices are 2 KW, 4 KW or none.
