T&T: Sump Oil Change

Its obvious that the oil companies have jumped on the urban legend that
you have to change your oil every 3000 miles by coming out with products
now for the people who are "slackers" and want to change every 5000.
Meanwhile, the new oil formulations allow us to change every 7k to 10k
miles.

On the flip side, I would like to see evidence that using the oil in
your diesel engine for more than 100 hours and over the winter actually
causes acidic pitting, etc.

I saw this article on the Yahoo home page this morning.
http://tinyurl.com/3uy37x

The article mentions some interesting new devices for measuring the
engine oil parameters while the engine is operating. It also says we as
a nation may be changing our sump oil too often at every 3,000 miles
instead of the longer interval recommended by most manufacturers.
