Local conditions may deviate from the norm. We had hailstones the size of
golf balls the other day. But the Snow and Ice Research Institute report of June
3 said that the arctic ice was melting faster than usual this year. Although
the winter was cold, the ice melt exceeds that of last year and open areas are
clearly visible in satellite images. The web site is:

On another chilly note. During a very forgettable period in my military
service career, I was transferred from Korea to bask in unaccustomed warmth in Ft.
Churchill, CA. The polar bears were as thick as squirrels in Central Park. Our
big problem was shooing them away from the garbage dump. I can't believe they
are an endangered species now.
