I have noted reference to "chilled water" A/C. How is that different?
Better? More expensive?
Thanks,

Subject: Re: T&T: "the best" AC system?
On my Krogen 42, it takes 2 - 16,500 BTU units to keep the boat cool in the
hot summers we have here on the Gulf coast. And that's with the PH windows
insulated with that foam/foil laminate they use to sheath houses with.
Before I used that, I had Textilene covers on the outside of the windows,
and it helped, but not nearly as much as the foam. With the windows
uncovered, it's like a damm greenhouse in the summer and the AC will never
keep up!
I have one mounted under the watch berth in the PH port side. The return air
is on the side of the berth, and it blows into the pilothouse and back into
the saloon through two vents, one under the watch berth facing forward and
the other above the ladder going down into the companionway. The thermostat
is above said ladder.
The other unit is mounted forward of the chart drawers and steering station.
It pulls air through a vent in the forward hanging locker, and blows cool
air into the pilothouse and the forward cabin. The PH vent is in front and
slightly left of the compass; the vent in the forward stateroom is on the
forward side of the hanging locker.
One seawater pump is mounted in the forward stateroom bilge, and supplies
both units. I can send pix if you'd like.
I would HIGHLY recommend the Mermaid units. I did a LOT of research before
buying one, and they came out on top by far. Five year unconditional
warranty, SS construction, very quiet and efficient. Mine has been running
perfectly since around 2002. Very nice people to work with. The only problem
is that if it needs warranty work, you have to send it back to the factory.
Of course you could get somebody local to fix it, but the point is it
probably won't break down, at least not for a long time! The unit is
self-contained and very easy to install yourself. Just needs 110V, raw water
supply, drain, and ducting.
