See http://www.tamug.edu/StatusUpdate.htm for a blog from Texas A&M at
Galveston with a fairly detailed chronology of events.
The "...Cynthia Woods (a Texas A&M University at Galveston vessel), a
38-foot Cape Fear sailboat, on which a crew of six -- four students and two
safety officers -- were sailing in the Regata de Amigos from Galveston to
Veracruz, Mexico."
Five of the six shared 4 life jackets and were rescued. The body of the
sixth was recovered later.
A few entries from the blog:
"Saturday, June 7, 2008
8:00 a.m.
The crew of the Cynthia Woods failed to communicate at the planned time of
contact, per standard operating procedure. At this point, officials at Texas
A&M University at Galveston contacted the United States Coast Guard in an
effort to establish verbal and visual contact with the Cynthia Woods.
Friday, June 6, 2008
approximately 10:00 p.m.
The Cynthia Woods was shown to still be on-track along the planned course of
the Regata de Amigos toward Veracruz, Mexico. Tracking information at
approximately midnight of that same evening showed that the Cynthia Woods
had begun to drift northwest toward the Texas Gulf Coast.
Friday, June 6, 2008
1:00 p.m.
At approximately 1 p.m. the TAMUG sailboat Cynthia Woods cleared the
Galveston jetties along with over twenty other sailboats to take part in the
2008 Regata de Amigos. The race, which runs every even-numbered year, runs
from Galveston, Texas to Veracruz, Mexico. "
Texas A&M at Galveston is one of the "Parts" of the Texas A&M System and is
also one of the five Maritime Academies in the country.
