As I recall the original geology article, scientists have found bacteria or
micro organisms that produce methane and live deep in the earth's crust.
These are organisms that, like the life forms around volcanic vents on the
sea floor do not require daylight or oxygen to survive. The methane is a
waste by-product of their metabolism.

(For all I know, one of the articles might even have been published in
Scientific American)

The methane produced by these micro organisms slowly percolate up through
the crust and soil.
Where the methane passes through an existing oil pool, some of the carbon
and hydrogen molecules combine with the existing liquid hydro-carbons to
increase the total volume of liquid hydro-carbon.
If the cap rock above the oil pool is impervious, the pocket usually capture
the methane as a gas pocket. In effect th epool increases in volume.
For the res of the crust area, the methane simply works it's way to the
surface where it now becomes part of the green house gasses that is always
ventin ginto the atmosphere.

There are natural gas wells which do not have any oil in them. This would
account for how such dry gas wells develop in the absence of liquid oil.

While you probably will not find many people in America that are willing to
concede the point , soviet scientist and geologists are way ahead in
research on oil and gas well locations.
