First off, I am an arm-chair boater right now ... although I've chartered a
couple of GB42s around the east coast/BVI.
I think the first question has to be what is your price range and your
expectation. Assuming you are price conscious and used to getting from point
A to B in a leisurely time, I would look at displacement trawlers. Kadey
Krogen 42 or 39. I'd look at Defever 44. With a bit richer budget, I would
consider the Nordhavn 43 or Selene 43/47.
My criteria are
1) Displacement hull, for best fuel economy. This means you won't be going
much faster than your sailboat (7-10 knots).
2) Pilot house, for space reasons. If you plan to spend time on your
trawler, I think having more "rooms" is better than less "rooms". The pilot
house gives you that, plus a great place to operate the boat. (This is in
contrast to the typical GB42 style where the inside helm station is part of
the salon/galley).
3. Fly bridge, with passage from fly bridge to pilot house. The fly bridge
gives you a great place to pilot from in good weather, plus a nice
entertainment area outside. The passage makes it easy to get from inside to
the fly bridge safely.
I have generally found these 3 criteria limit you to a fairly short list.
Now having said all that, I do wonder about those power-cats!

HI,
I have just signed on to the line and have no experience with power boats
but for suffering the occasional wake on my sail boat.
I plan on buying a trawler in the near future either new or used but do not
know what models around 40 ft are suitable for cruising the Caribbean or
say a run to Bermuda,.I was wondering if this forum imparts that kind of
advice or can point me to suitable resources.
Thanks,
Peter
