It's like getting a service pack from Microsoft with updates for
windows. Bug fixes, improvements in how some things work, and minor
enhancements. For instance, the ability to support a fishfinder was
added to the 2006/2010 via one of these updates. Then subsequently as
they worked out bugs there were several more updates, which also
contained a variety of other items. On the 3006/3010, IIRC, they added
support for Bluechart G2 data cards.
If you want to see exactly what is available to you, first note the
level of your software on the first screen you see when starting your
unit. Should be something like 4.00 or 5.00. The most recent for the
2006/2010 is 5.80.
Then go to Garmin's web site:
http://www.garmin.com
and find Updates & Downloads, under Support.
Choose "show all updates and downloads".
Select your unit from the list.
Choose "Download".
Accept the terms.
This will take you to the page showing what was changed in every update.
You can then decide whether or not you wish to update. If you do, call
Garmin (800)800-1020. They'll sell you the data card containing the
update, and set you up to return it for a full refund.
