Frank, here is a paste and edit of a post I made on the Passagemaker
forum. We are knocking around Baltimore and environs the next few
days if you want to come see our set up (and the other stuff we've
done to/for the boat since you last saw her). Same invitation holds
for other listees as well.
"My original plan, back when, was to add the weather station to the
RD30 we bought to put by my bed side (use it for anchor and depth
watch, amongst other things). Then we saw a wireless La Crosse system
WS-1515U for 90 bucks at Sam's Club at Christmas. Hmmm, no wires to
run all that way, hmmm 90 bucks. Well, six months later no Airmar.
The la Crosse is great and gives me all the info the Airmar would
have. Per a previous query, yes, you have to do the math on wind.
Let's see, I am doing 10 mph, I am going south, and the wind speed
shows 16 mph... must be a south wind of 6 mph! What it really does of
course is show you apparent wind speed and direction. For $700 I can
do lot's of math, but it is seldom even necessary. If you learned
your current vectors in navigating class, you can do this. But I
think you'll find it is rare that you need much precision.
Since it is wireless, I can move the main display all over the
boat: either helm, stateroom, wherever. A BIG advantage over the
AirMar/RD30 system. We use that feature a lot. Mine came with a
secondary display showing inside and outside temp. Definitely the
most bang for the buck of the many gadgets on board. Ironically, the
RD30 is probably a close second; I plan on adding two more in the
future. "
