The Sharpie method MIGHT last 6 months in direct tropical sunlight. That is
what we use and they fade pretty quickly. We will likely go over to vinyl at
some point.

Dinghy numbers, another solution. The numbers can be applied using a big fat
Sharpie Permenant Marker. Alcohol will remove the ink if necessary and you
can
go over them again and again if they fade. If you aren't artistic, you can
use
a stencil, but I hate trying to line up stencils! I used the marker to put
the
boat's name on the bottom of the dinghy...thus it can be identified if it
gets
away from you (voice of experience!) but people can't SEE it there so
don't
know that 'hummm...that boat must be vacant...'
