T&T: Hull speed theoretically

It depends on what you would consider "happily"? The boat has absolutely no
opinion. So that leaves you. Would YOU be happy with a 50hp Diesel? I am
not gonna do the calculations but let's say yours are correct. In theory you
can go hull speed with your little motor. Now let's add some wind and some
weather and there you are 2 kts off the pace. There are a lot of sailboats
out there that are "properly" powered. You add some adverse weather and they
slow down a lot. Also it will be harder to maneuver since a small blast of
power will not do much. You will have to give long blasts complete with black
smoke(heavily loaded) to get the boat to change directions. So I would think
a bit more than "theoretical power" provides some convenience and luxury and
in some cases, safety. It also provides for some margin in areas that
"theory" does not cover(ie we don't operate in a vacuum...our hulls are not
perfectly smooth and clean...there is
air resistance above the water line regardless of wind,etc.).

My 36 ft. trawler, probably 34 at the lwl, would me happily powered with a
50 hp diesel? Is that correct?

See you on the Waterways!
