T&T: 15 HP MERCURY OUTBOARD

Hi All
 
I have a 2002 Mercury outboard and I need to change the raw water impeller.
When I try to separate the lower unit, it seems to be attached to the power
head via that stainless rod that locks the motor when you shift into
reverse.  It looks like that has to come out with the lower unit but I can't
tell how to disconnect it from it's connection under the head?  Am I going
about this all wrong?
