< Normally you would use a separate hydraulic pump that the auto pilot  
controls. This would be fitted with valves at on near the pump to  
close it off from the main hydraulic lines if need be. >

No extra pump is required.  I had the same setup on my 80' Dutch  
fishing trawler and the auto pilot head just wired to the solenoids.   
Any hydraulic shop can help you or talk to a commercial auto pilot  
manufacturer, like ComNav in British Columbia, which I know is very  
experienced with your setup.
