Guess we will have to borrow a page from the history books. 
Lets see;  Greeks and Romans used Gally slaves in their triremes.
Vikings  had a single bank of rower on each side but being a democracy  
everybody rowed. 
Except the Captain who beat his tom tom to keep it up,  the rowing pace 
that is. 
For all that; Viking ships would most likely outrun a Roman galley  or 
even a Trireme. judging from  the recreation of viking ships found and 
duplicated.
Viking  ships had an average cruising speed comparable to modern trawlers. 

Hey that might even start a new boating trend. <VBG>
