It is itself an external antenna that has been optimized for wifi
connections.  It can be used a couple of different ways, but the way
that I use it is that I plug in a regular ethernet cable between the
MetroFlex and the laptop, the MetroFlex then acts as a DHCP server to
give me an IP address in which I can connect and manage the MetroFlex. 
I instruct the MetroFlex to connect to a wifi connection and after it
reboots I'm up on that wifi connection.

It is possible to connect a wifi access point to the ethernet port of
the MetroFlex if you have more than one computer that needs to use it. 
Of course that is a bit more complex to configure but not difficult.
