T&T: Alaska Registration

Larry and all
We moved to Alaska last year from Michigan. We have a sailboat (yes, I have
invaded the list) that is still in the Great Lakes. It is not documented.
When I went to the DMV to register the boat I would have been required to
sign a statement that stated that the boat was to be used primarily in
Alaskan waters. Because of that, it is still registered in Michigan. The
registration fee in Alaska was minimal.
As to tax; there is no state sales tax in Alaska. Some of the cities do have
a sales tax. I am not sure if these cities would be allowed to tax a boat
purchase. I do know that my daughter bought her new truck in a city that
does have a sales tax, but there was a maximum tax of $25 on the purchase.
I will be investigating documenting my boat out of Alaska and then moving it
south to the Gulf. Any information anyone can give me is appreciated.
We summer in Alaska and winter south in our RV. We are currently in Corpus
Christi. Oh yeah, the boat is on the hard in Canada's North Channel, waters
we know very well.

Mike, you indicated in your table that Alaska taxes boats. Do you know who
collects the tax in Alaska and how much the tax is?
I am considering moving my boat to Alaska and documenting it there.
I am in Washington now and boats here pay a tax and fee together each year
for registration. Documented boats pay the same and display only the
sticker.
Thanks
