I don't mean to imply for even one moment that you should not avail yourself
of all the nav. info you can have. Plus everyone should remember chanels
change move and sometimes even go away totally. In the course of a year it
can really do all of these things. The chanel I speak of is only eighty feet
wide for a boat drawing three and a half feet my hatteras in the same chanel
is much more restricted. Of course I run these channels at 25 kts so eighty
feet is a very narrow chanel for the reasons you have pointed out. Even the
time it takes to update can make travel in a narrow channel very much a
white knuckle exp. I just took exception to a sweeping statement although I
do agree with you in almost any other area but my own. It's quite diferent
running a very tight channel many times a season then when traveling in a
area you're not totally familar with. In summary for me my gps is priceless,
when I travel it's but another aid to nnavigation. A twenty ft wide channel
not properly marked and not going in it often would certainnly make me
reconsider my options.
