I used Ms. Browning last summer and would second the recommendation.
I interviewed Mr. Panico, and would have been happy to have used him,
one of the insurance brokers referred him to me. I also heard very
good things about Mr. Noyce. But, I had to make a choice. A couple of
validations of Gale's work were that she cited a couple of things
that really irked or surprised the brokers and the owner, until
follow-up by the boat yard they all respected (and had done a lot of
work on the boat) proved her right. That, and I have had no real
"discoveries" of important things she missed in 6 subsequent months
of extensive cruising. A few minor ones, to be sure, but that is
usually the case with any survey.
Per Ron's comment, find out any surveyor's experience and knowledge
of the particular type of boat to be surveyed. This cuts down the
chance of them missing or not understanding an issue endemic to
certain boats.
You didn't mention what type of engines the target boat has. I was
very pleased with Tom Hug of MR Power out of Baltimore,as much for
his teaching skills as his survey. He was extremely knowledgeable
about Detroits, you'd have to ask him regarding other engines; he is
a straight shooter.
