Moorings are available in Dering Harbor from Piccozzi's or Shelter Island
Yacht Club (you must belong to a club with reciprocal privileges). I think
they are both now around $40/night. (The difference is that the Club
moorings include launch service, showers, and the "privilege" of buying $10
drinks at their bar.) Jack's is also listed as renting moorings, but we
don't know anything about them. There is also an area near the entrance that
is legal for anchoring, but not very protected. Take the ferry across to
Greenport.
If you're looking for the least expensive (as well as the nicest anchorage
in the area), anchor in the outer harbor in Coecles and dinghy in to Coecles
Harbor Marina at the head of the harbor. Pick up a map of Shelter Island at
the marina store and walk to the ferry next to Dering. Coecles Harbor
Marina also has slips and moorings ($$$). At times, they insist on a 3-day
minimum for the moorings on a weekend.
I have added entries to Active Captain all around the area. As others have
said, few of them really give you access to Greenport. It's a great area to
cruise. Remember, however, that most of it is in "The Hamptons" (see F.
Scott Fitzgerald) and NOTHING ashore is cheap!
