Jim and others,

Thanks for the education. I sure could use it. My wife (K1MMY) and I
(K1DER) already have our ham licenses. We're trying to connect using my
wife's General privileges.

If I haven't sorted it out before we head south in the fall, I may just
look you up. I did send an e-mail to the local ham club and am waiting for
a response. What I have found, however, is that boat installations have a
unique set of problems. We have the AT130 tuner connected to a ground
plate on the hull with 4" wide copper tape. Unfortunately, being on the
hard, I don't have contact with seawater any more. I still thought I could
transmit to Virginia though.

Tom

Tom -

#1: The suggestion to contact the local ham clubs is an excellent one.
If you were in New Bern, NC, I'd be happy to bring my antenna analyzer
down to wherever you docked and check things out.

#2: (trivia) The word "ham" is not capitalized. There is a legend
that it was once an acronym or the three letters of three hams from the
Harvard ham club, but the bottom line is that it should be lower case.
Similarly, the Icom logo is all caps, albeit with a "o" dot above the i.
But if you look in any of your Icom documentation, you'll see that they
write it as "Icom" as I am doing.

Come on down to NC, and in the meantime study for your ham license!
It's fun, there's now no code requirement, and you'll learn things of
value to you while cruising.
