and

Note that the club in Norwich specializes in digital modes. Both clubs
appear to be helpful to newcomers.

Some things that you might look at before the arrival of the Ham is the
existence of ground plane (GP) for the HF frequencies. The GP needs to be
bonded to the boat. If you don't find copper strips or mesh or some RF
reflective material, it could be that the GP is being provided by a
Dynaplate located on the outside of the hull below the waterline, typically
on the stern of powerboats.

Check the physical condition of the antenna and all associated connectors
and coax too. Replace as needed. Hopefully the Ham will have access to an
antenna analyzer so s/he can test the electrical properties of the antenna.

I also suggest you do a Google search for "Gordon West SSB ground." You'll
find several good links that way.

Good luck!

Are there any HAMs in the Mystic/Ledyard CT area familiar with AirMail and
WinLink that would be willing to give me some guidance? I'll even preheat
the pilothouse and bring your choice of cold beer or hot coffee.
