T&T: hydrocaps

The hydrocaps I have on my Trojan batteries have a bayonet fitting, you just
twist them 90 degrees and lift, very easy. Each make of batteries has a
different fitting that has to be specified when ordering the hydrocaps. I
have found that sometimes they stick and the twisting can bust off the
bayonet fitting glued to the bottom of the hydrocap "mushroom". They can
easily be glued back with model cement, but now I make sure I twist slowly
and from down low on the 'mushroom'. There is nothing to test in the cap
itself, it is merely a plastic housing for some small piece of material that
does the magic of turning the fumes back to water to drip back into the
cells. They work perfectly, I rarely have had to add much water in
years....years! They fall in the category of products that just work like
their supposed to, no tweaking, no muss, no fuss.

I'll be looking at a boat with Rolls 8D's and hydrocaps. What, if anything,
will I need to open the hydrocaps?
I plan on checking the specific gravity. I have a good hygrometer, just need
to know if there's anything to be prepared for with the hydrocaps.
