Furuno (and probably others) offers this "Smart transducer" (mine came in an
Airmar box) in several versions: temp, speed, depth; speed, depth; etc.
Although they attach to most Furuno NavNet gear, you can buy an RD30 which
provides a readout for this and other NEMA gear.

| "I'd like to ask a research favor from you as well. It looks like our
| speed transducer crapped out. Airmar makes a non-paddlewheel transducer
| that works off of ultrasonic signal (I think) measurements of small
| bubbles and particles in the water. This new style has been out for
several
| years now and I'm wondering if there are any rumblings about it, good,
| bad, or indifferent. Not having to clean a paddle wheel would be nice,
| but not if the sensor doesn't work for well."
