Arild had a solid list of considerations...let's explore just one:
"Find an alternative to the wasteful electric hot water tank. Why heat water
if you are not using it now?"
If you find yourelf running a genny JUST to heat hot water, there is room for
improvement. If you run your genny an hour daily, say, for cooking or battery
charging then use extra power to heat water...that's the ideal use of surplus
genny power if you need hot water.
When I bought my old Hatteras I replaced the old and dying 20 gal hot water
heater with a 12 gallon....at 60% the capacity I figured I could heat it much
faster when lying at anchor...With a smaller mass it does cool a bit faster
than the old one..or maybe the old one had better insulation. Then when the
1500 watt heating element died I discovered an 1800 watt...another 20%
improvement in heating speed from electric...
During the approximate 45 minutes daily I run my genny I get enough mildly hot
water for a good shower and dishwashing purposes. If I had a large crowd
aboard my setup would not work.
